Access and Accessibility

At the Beck Theatre, we are committed to making every visit comfortable and enjoyable. From assisted performances to accessibility adjustments within the venue. We strive to meet your needs so that everyone can fully enjoy our space.

Visiting Us

You can find information about parking spaces for Blue Badge holders, our car park and transport routes on our Getting Here page.

Find the right assisted performance for you

We have a range of assisted performances available at the Beck to suit your needs.

Relaxed performances: A theatre experience with adjusted sound levels, no pyrotechnics or strobe lighting, and dimmed house lights. Loud announcements and hand dryers are removed, and earplugs or defenders are available. Guests can enter and exit freely, with a quiet area provided for breaks.

Dementia-Friendly Film Screenings: Our dementia-friendly screenings differ from regular cinema showings. House Lights are kept up for better visibility. Seating is unreserved, except wheelchair spaces. Tickets include free tea and biscuits after the film to encourage socialising.

Audio described: During these performances, dialogue is incorporated with live commentary. The purpose of this is to explain what is happening on stage via a headset. We can also provide Touch Tours prior to the show which you can book in with our Box Office team.

Captioned: For those who are deaf or hard of hearing, select performances display text on screens, allowing audiences to read along. These captions provide dialogue, sound effects, and other key audio elements to enhance the experience.

British Sign Language interpreted: For those theatre performances a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter stands to the side of the stage to interpret the show. To book tickets with the highest visibility of the interpreter we would recommend booking directly with our Box Office team.

Building Access and Accessible Seating

Entry to the theatre is via a ramp to the right of the main entrance, leading to automated doors. All of our main public areas have step-free, level access throughout.
Our accessible toilet includes handrails, easy-turn taps and locks, an emergency pull cord and baby-changing facilities.

Auditorium

Auditorium

Our auditorium has a traditional raked amphitheatre design with handrails at the end of each row. Rows A-D are positioned on the ground floor, while seating starts to tier from Row E, with two steps between each row. There is no lift to access the upper part of the auditorium.

Wheelchair Accessibility

Wheelchair Accessibility

We accommodate up to 8 wheelchair users per performance with companion seating. Please book in advance, as spaces aren’t guaranteed on the day. Due to licensing restrictions, we cannot transfer patrons to theatre seats. Let us know when booking if you use a large motorised wheelchair or scooter.

Step Free Seats

  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Attendance Allowance

Hearing Assistance

An Induction Loop System is available in the Box Office and auditorium. Visitors using hearing aids should switch to the ‘T’ setting and adjust volume as needed. For the best experience, we recommend seating in Row D.

Additional Support

  • Assistance Dogs: If you’re attending with an assistance dog, please call in advance so we can arrange suitable seating. Assistance animals are expected to be suitably trained and appropriately insured.
  • Walking Aids: Walking aids can be stored under seats or by staff upon request.
  • Pre-Show Visits: Touch Tours are available for visually impaired patrons or those with sensory processing disorders. These tours allow visitors to explore the stage, touch costumes and props, and gain a better understanding of the performance. Familiarisation Visits are available to help patrons get accustomed to the venue before attending a performance. To arrange a pre-show visit please contact our Box Office team.

Special Effects & Medical Requirements

  • Some performances may include strobe lighting, pyrotechnics, loud noises, haze, or smoke effects. While we aim to provide accurate information in advance, creative elements may change on the day. If you have concerns, please speak to our Front of House team.
  • Guests requiring medicine, food, drink, or medical equipment to manage medical conditions are welcome to bring these.
  • A trained First Aider is always on-site - please ask any staff member if assistance is needed.
